He served as a rifleman during Earth State of war II.

Arness joined the war try later high school and became a rifleman with the U.S. 3rd Infantry Partition. In 1944, he was severely wounded during Functioning Shingle in Anzio, Italy. After undergoing several surgeries, Arness was honorably discharged on Jan 29, 1945. Among his decorations are the Bronze Star Metal, the Regal Center, the European-African-Middle Eastern Entrada Medal, the Globe State of war Ii Victory Medal and the Combat Infantryman Badge.

He was a surfer.

While American audiences volition forever know Arness as Marshal Matt Dillon, the actor reached cult status in Europe as Zeb Macahan in How the West Was Won. The belatedly-'70s Western tv serial found its audience in Europe and was rebroadcast many times on networks in France, Frg, Italy and Sweden.
